Support your local Bowling Green Community Farmer's Market!

We found some great tiny carrots, homemade salsa, tomatoes, and nice onions at the Community Farmer's Market this weekend.

U.S. Dept. of Agriculture USDA Gov on Flickr

It's fun to shop there because you know your money is going to help local farmers and craftspeople. PLUS, much of the merchandise is natural and organic. Potter Laura Bain-Selbo is there many times with her fun pottery too.

We have two or more Farmer's Markets in this area.

The Community Farmer's Market is closer to where I live. They are at 2319 Nashville Road. Here is their link:
http://www.communityfarmersmarketbg.com/

They are open Saturdays 8-1 and Tuesdays 2-6 (Winter hours). It is for Producers only.

It is year-round too. There are several other Farmer's Markets, but this is my favorite one. Look for the BG Farmer's Market to open in April, and possibly one downtown at Fountain Square this year. I hope that pans out.

From the Garden Spot - - finding heirloom seeds, and shopping at the Farmer's Market, tonight's storm, more.

I do like the new Community Farmer's Market on 31-W. It's the one with the bus out front.

They were packed with shoppers, and had lots of choices of things to buy: meat, baked goods, hothouse tomatoes, English cucumbers, blueberries, onions, biscuits, sandwiches, drinks, other vegetables, salsa, wooden trains, pottery, knitted goods, gifts, soap, ice cream, cakes, cookies, coffee, breads, canned goodies, and a whole lot more.

It was fun. Rickey and I went around about five times. I saw some people I knew and said hi.

Luckily, we had some shopping bags in the back of the car, which were helpful. We are "loaded for bear" here now.

Now to wait for the storm in this area tonight, which is due to hit us about 11 p.m. and continue until in the morning.

Cross your fingers!

FYI, here is the Community Farmer's Market Facebook page.

I really like it that they are doing the Bus project too, to help people get real food in their areas locally. And, looking at their Facebook page just now, there is also going to be a Folk School there. That sounds neat. I will be looking at that for sure.

Will there be an Ice Storm in my area? Maybe...

Waiting on the weather...

It may ice up around here soon. I will cross my fingers until then...

There was an ice storm in the area that I can remember several times. The worst one broke many branches off the Weeping Willow tree in the yard and made a lot of strange sounds that woke me up. The strangest sound besides the plop-plop-plop sound of tree limbs falling all over the place was the utter silence of the whole neighborhood.

No car sounds, just nothing. No other sounds, except the pinging of sleet.

Of course, the ice on the electric lines weighed them down, and the whole area did not have power for days. So it's all about listening and sneaking a peek outside every so often.

Stay warm!

Personal Blogs, plus this Winter, Ministry of the Arts, a Christmas Card site, Kindle download, more.

Personal Blogs...

Do you have more than one personal blog?

I do... and now I want to put them together. I will be keeping this blog current, but not posting here as much. I want to keep all the links going on it though. A few days ago, I looked for a blog that had been totally erased. They lost all their links! I don't want to do that.

That's not something I want to do. I read that you could go back and redo blog postings. What a great idea! And somebody who has a link on a posting with other links that no longer exist wants to take their link off. Which I understand.

When I learn how to put all these postings on the other site, or send them there, I will do that.

The Weather... and this Winter!

The Farmer's Almanac says that this winter will be one of the coldest ever. Here in Kentucky, that would mean that  we could have at least two BIG snowstorms. That would be OK if I didn't have to go anywhere! "Slip-sliding away..." is not my favorite thing when driving a car.

Ministry of the Arts

Here is that link:
Ministry of the Arts - they have some great Christmas cards, and also statuettes, bookmarks, and lots more here. It is a Catholic site, with awesome artwork.

And FYI: free ebooks:
FYI: free ebook: How to Search Obituaries to find Ancestors and Trace Your Family Tree.

Download here: http://bit.ly/free-obituary-ebook
And here is a novel for free today for your Kindle:  Underground by Beth Brown. It has one good review.

From the Back Cover:
"Nothing exciting ever happened in Emily's sleepy Church Hill neighborhood. Just when she'd come to accept that she lives in probably the most boring place ever, a giant sinkhole opens up in the middle of the street and swallows two cars.

With the help of her best friend Sarah, Emily decides to investigate the mysterious circumstances surrounding the appearance of the hole and the strange behavior of the city officials in charge of repairing it. When they find themselves in over their heads with the investigation--and trapped at the bottom of the pit--the girls learn that there is much more buried beneath the surface of their hometown than just its shadowy history.

About the Author:
Beth Brown is the recipient of the Library of Virginia's 13th Annual People's Choice Award for her book Haunted Plantations of Virginia. Her work has been featured on Travel Channel, The Biography Channel, History, and the Emmy Award-winning program 'Virginia Currents'. She has authored five non-fiction books and is the co-creator of the popular Richmond Macabre anthology series."
It sounds good. I just downloaded it. I will have to find my Kindle power cord before reading it though.

Projects, projects! Making my list easier... plus Kesterson's Antiques in Madisonville.

Projects...

Do you have some projects to do that you feel are languishing on the back burner way too long?

I do. And maybe you do, too.

Today I'm going to start doing (keep doing) the "regular" things, just spending less time on them.

This will hopefully make time for other, just-as-important, projects.

Looking for antiques...
I recently re-visited the city of Madisonville, Kentucky. I got to visit a great antique store there called Westerson's Antiques. This store recently uncovered a beautiful sign on the side of the building. The newspaper was called, and many customer's came to visit.

This place reminds me of other fun General Stores I have visited. There are neat items in all the nooks and crannys there, plus, if you listen hard, some great stories and history of when the building was a grocery store.

Last time, I cleaned out her collection of hatboxes. I needed those. And found that finding hatboxes is not easy. They do have some new ones out there, but they are hard to find.

I loved the floor best. It's uneven, with character. And there is a place there where things, like jewelry and lamps, can be fixed. Be prepared to see some neat things there.

Here are some photos of my most recent visit there:

Kesterson's new/old Dr. Pepper sign.

The Owner renovates these beautiful chandeliers herself!

And here are some more photos of the visit:
Kesterson's Antiques in Madisonville, Kentucky.

All for now,
Betsy

Rain.... mowing... and other good thoughts.

I do love the rain.

It can get in the way of mowing, but that's OK. I just turn the height gauge up on the mower, and the grass is a bit higher when the yard finally dries up.

In this section of Kentucky, if you don't mow when the weather is right, the next time you get ready to mow, it will rain. That's just reality.

Some friends on Facebook are talking about the rain. One is listening to ghost stories. Others are hunkering down at home, and some don't have a window where they are to see it raining.

But thought it's grey, it's nice outside. Really! Elvis was looking for his lost love in the COLD Kentucky rain... but if you are not from here, you should know that rain here is sometimes refreshing and semi-warm.

Here's to rain. And reading. And working.

This blog may move somewhere later this year. Because I will be working on books in the rain instead of my blogs. But that's OK.

From the Garden Spot... Flying with FlyLady, and Blogging

Today, as I explained on my other blog, The Moon and the Willow Tree, I told myself to get ALL my blogs done.

A scary Busy Bee from Clker.com

This is my second-to-last blog to complete today. The last one is a Club blog, for the local BGAMUG Computer Club. I will be posting about the date of the next meeting, and how the Auction went. Also I will be talking about my taking a year off from Webmaster duties vs. retiring (I'm NOT retiring...)

So... I thought I would share the FlyLady link again. Between "flying" and delayed maintenance here (plus organization) I am very busy. Add that to finishing books and projects and trainings. But getting things done requires MAKING time.

So this morning I am making time for these blogs, updating all, and then getting busy with other semi-fun projects and fun ones.

Here in Bowling Green, Kentucky the weather is really good. There was fog this morning, but hopefully this will burn off this afternoon.

How are things in your neck of the woods? Good, I hope.

Getting geared up for learning.... Secrets of Happy Families book, 350.org activists on NPR

Rickey said it was like a beautiful Fall day outside today. Fall... already? Really?

It's been a longish summer, and sometimes very hot here in Kentucky.

The park downtown is lush and the flowers are still hanging in their containers. Somebody decided today was an "event" and played loud music in the park through the speakers. Sometimes I think people leave them on by mistake.

Today Bruce Filer was on NPR so I listened on the way downtown. http://www.npr.org/2013/02/17/171929472/control-the-chaos-with-secrets-of-happy-families

I liked it.

Before that, there was a show on about 350.org, the new climate change group doing great things. The group bears watching and even helping.

What's up with you, wonderful readers?

Teresa's will stay open - - and maybe you can still see Teresa.

We got to see Teresa again!

We had just discovered Teresa's (well, a bit back) and found out that she had the secret recipe for Reno's Buffalo Chicken, and served it on Friday's.

Well, we got to sample it one Friday, but no more. I asked for the Secret Recipe, but didn't get it. Darn. It's still secret.

On the good side, we got to see Teresa last week - which was exciting. I wasn't sure if she would be there that day.

She gave me a hug too, just like the first time I met her. She is so special. I am sad about her leaving, but understand that she was ready for a new time in her life.
She's not Teresa.

Maybe you can still see Teresa this week. But eventually, she is going to leave to spend more time with her family... and the new owner will take over completely. The new owner is the Colonial Inn in Russellville, which plans to keep the place open, but maybe with a new name.

Personally, I think that the T-shirts that say "No, I'm Not Teresa" as so neat! I wish they could keep that, the name, and her menu, especially the Buffalo Chicken. For those who used to live here, and remember Reno's, they had Buffalo Chicken before it was cool.

And those hot wings were really good. My friends used to order the hottest chicken they had. I would order the mild kind. And used the sauce!
