Sunday, July 1st
Today is NHRA Drag Racing at Beech Bend Park starting at 10 a.m. Find out more: 781-7634 and on their website.

A community celebration and live broadcast for Bowling Green's "La Neustra" Spanish radio program is today from 3-5 p.m. at Preston Miller Park. Find out more: 393-3766 or check this City page: City hosts Block Party.

Monday, July 2nd
 




Today starts a "Fill the Backpack" program for local students from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Help WKU as part of the United Way Day of Caring. Bring school supplies to the WCVK  Studio at 14-7 Scottsville Road. Help local students! 781-7326.

 
Chaney's Dairy Barn has Farm Tours today at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. These must be booked ahead of time. Go to their website to find out more, and to their Farm Tour page.

A free computer class is offered at the Smiths Grove Branch library - Microsoft PowerPoint, from 2-3 p.m. You must pre-register to attend. Call 563-6651.

The Skate Box has a benefit skate today for Mike Vincent from 6-9 p.m. Cost is $5.00. 843-3394.






 Tuesday, July 3rd
The Fountain Square  Business Association Promotions Group meets today at 8 a.m.at the Capital Arts Center, 3rd Floor. This meeting is open to the public.

The Citizens First Thunderfest is today at 4 p.m. at the National Corvette Museum. The price of admission is $15.00 per carload. Find out more at the BG Area Convention & Visitor's Bureau page: Thunderfest Details, and the Kiwanis page about it: 41st Annual Thunderfest.Here is a brief description from the Kiwanis site:

"Live music by Salvage Town, children's activities, inflatables, a live broadcast by SAM 100.7 and a large fireworks extravaganza highlight the Thunderfest Independence Day Celebration,.  The gates open at 4:00 pm and activities begin at 5 pm.  Children's attractions, music, food vendors, and other entertainment are available until about 9:15 pm, when the fireworks show begins.  Admission is $5 per person or $15 per carload with children under 12 admitted free."

The Bowling Green Hot Rods baseball team has a special All You Can Eat Tuesday AND 4th of July Fireworks show today. The buffet is $8.00 additional charge. 901-2121. Tickets run $7.00 to $12. Find out more: 901-2121. You can buy tickets and check the official calendar here at the site.

Thursday, June 28th
The Main Branch library has a computer class today. It is free. You must pre-register to attend. Call 781-4882.

The WKU Chess Club meets at 6 p.m. at the WKU Faculty House. 918-809-6278.

Another free computer class is offered today at the Main Branch library from 6-7 p.m. It is Introduction to Genealogy Resources. You must pre-register to attend. Call 781-4882.

The SoKy Concert Band plays in a free concert from 7-8 p.m. at the WKU Fine Arts Center Patio.

Friday, June 29th
Chaney's has farm tours today. Check out this info. from their website:
..."11am & 1pm, we offer Family Farm Tours for individuals & families. $7/person - includes scoop of ice cream. Must be booked in advance. (270) 843-5567."

Beech Bend Park has stock car racing at 5 p.m. today.

Saturday, June 30th 
 Chaney's has Ice Cream and a Moo-vie (Despicable Me) today at dusk. This movie is free. Please no drinks or snacks. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. 843-5567.

The Historic RailPark and Train Museum has a free All Aboard Series Top 20 Radio Show story today at 8:30 a.m. Coffee will be served.

Hopscotch's Playplace has a benefit for Alex's Lemonade Stand from 9-2. 842-0420.

The Warren County Extension office is having Dairy Day today from 9-12 noon with lots of activities. Registration is $10.00 Call 842-1681 for more info.

A free computer class, Introduction to Genealogy Resources, is today at 10 a.m. to noon at the Main branch library. You must pre-register to attend. Call 781-4882.

Barnes and Noble bookstore is having a Book Fair to support BRIMS today at 1 p.m. Find out more:

Riders in the Sky perform tonight at SKyPAC at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 to $17.

Saturday, June 9th
Today is the Second Saturday Street Fair from 9-3 or 5 in downtown Bowling Green, Kentucky all around Fountain Square Park. Lots of booths will be there, food, activities for the kids, music, and much more. Find out more at their Facebook page here: http://www.facebook.com/SecondSaturdaysBG.

The Pots Place at 428 East Main Street will be open with lots of fun pottery and art to see. Come by to visit!

The Historic RailPark and Train Museum has RailTales at 10 a.m. for preschoolers.

Live near or in Scottsville? Andee Rudloff has a mural painting in Scottsville today which you can participate in. Just go to Have 4 Change at 49 Hillview Drive in Scottsville.

The Cavemen Barbershop Chorus performs at 7 p.m. at South Warren High School tonight. Tickets are $12. in advance and $15. at the door. Find out more: 270-202-0515.

Octagon Hall on Nashville Road is the site of a Ghost Hunt Weekend live at 4 p.m. Tickets are $225.00. SyFy Channel Ghost Hunters will be there. Tickets are limited - call 1-800-604-9101.

The Aviation Heritage Park is having a Hangar Party today at the Warren County Regional Airport starting at 6i p.m. Music starts at 8. Tickets are $30.00 for adults and $15.00 for ages 6-12.

Events in the Bowling Green, Kentucky area

Any day this week is a great day to go downtown to Fountain Square Park. Just saying! My favorite shop is the Pots Place pottery studio and gallery, and I also like Labold's Salvage (their FB page), one block down on E. Main (in the Spot Cash store). I just got this information via email.

This link tells how to register for the 8th Annual Polar Express storytime event at the Historic Railpark and Train Museum on November 11th.

Their logo for this event shows the dates of this event: December 5, 6, 7, and 12,13, 14. It was a very popular event last year.










What is the Polar Express event?

It is a free event (you must pre-register) where readings are held of the popular Polar Express book inside of a real train car.

I have some events here for the next week you may like. I am going to limit it to mostly Cheap or Free events. To see everything going on this week, check out the links to the right and/or get a Soky Happenings magazine at Barnes and Noble or another location.

11-1-11 through 11-30-2011: This is Military Appreciation Month at the Corvette Museum. From the KentuckyLiving site: "All those who have served and their immediate families receive free museum admission."

Today is Election Day! Go to vote at your polling place and tonight will be more exciting, as you watch to see who won.

Also: make sure to have Beans and Cornbread downtown at the Presbyterian Church. The BG Noon Lions put it on so it will be a Good Deed to go. Plus, the food is GREAT. I love their corn cakes. Mmmmmm.....


Library events today at the Main branch library include Toddler time at the Main Branch library, Preschool Spanish at 11:30 a.m. and the Lego Club at 6 p.m. for ages 5 and up. 781-4882.

The Graham Book Club will discuss Runaway Stories by Alice Munro at 6 p.m. 781-1441.

A free computer class is offered at the Bob Kirby branch library, Ebay for Beginners from 6-7 p.m. you must pre-register to attend. Call 782-0252.

Fountain Square Players have auditions at 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 313 State Street (per their Facebook page and online site) for their play, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. People may also sign up for set construction, stage crew, costume makers, and props people today. This play will be shown on January 5-8, 2012. Call for more details: 782-3119.

The Graham Branch library has Graham Troopers today at 3 p.m. for school-age students. 781-1441.

The Main Branch library has 'Be a Star" for grades 5-12 at 4:00 p.m. today. This is a new drama troupe, and no experience is necessary. 781-4882.

The Presbyterian Church has a movie "Lemon Tree" followed by a discussion led by Dr Ingrid Lilly, scholar of religious studies at WKU. Call for more info: 745-5755.

The Kentucky Museum at WKU has a presentation at 7 p.m. "Lincoln and Secession". 745-2592.

WKU has a Percussion Ensemble concert at 7:30 at the Fine Arts Center Recital Hall. Tickets are only $4.00 a person.  745-3751.

The BG Western Choral Society and the WKU chorale along with Harpeth Rising, a bluegrass band, will perform at WKU's Van Meter Auditoium at 730 p.m., performing  A Bluegrass Mass. tickets are $10.00 for general admission, $8.00 for seniors, and $5.00 for students. 745-5301.

Both Jackson's Orchard and Chaney's Dairy Barn have events this month.

Jackson's Orchard has their Pumpkin Festival weekends this month. 2011 Pumpkin Festival - 5 Fall Weekends "Beginning Saturday, September 24 & Sunday, September 25 then every weekend through the end of October. Oct 1 & 2, Oct 8 & 9, Oct 15 & 16 and Oct 22 & 23. The month of October brings lots of excitement to the Orchard. With Halloween approaching, the color is Orange! You’ll find family fun every weekend for the five weekends before Halloween. That means Wagon Rides to the Pumpkin Patch, Pick-Your-Own Pumpkins, The Corn Maze, Petting Zoo, Pony Rides, Straw Castle, Face Painting, The Goat Ranch, and The Cider Slider, our Children’s Slide. Not to mention all the Great Food including the Jackson's Orchard Hot Dog Cart! Did we mention Caramel Apples?"

The Hobson House has an event for ages 8-12 to learn about a soldier's life during the Civil War at 1 p.m. From their site: "Saturday, October 22 at 1:00pm -- An "unCivil War" Workshop for boys and girls to learn a little about a soldier's life during the war. Kids will learn about Kentucky's status and the causes of the Civil War and then make "soldiers" out of wooden clothespins, also known as clothes pegs. The "soldiers" will stand up or "sit" on cardboard horses and will be able to camp, march, and do maneuvers on a big Civil War map of Bowling Green. And of course we must have refreshments for these hardworking soldiers---hard tack and "swamp water! Reservations are required and individual fees do apply. Class size is limited.
