Writing time! Plus events in and near Bowling Green, Kentucky.

November is winding down...

I had a great Thanksgiving. I hope you all did too.

This week I hope to get my NaNoWriMo novel done. It is due by the end of the month.

The word count needed is 50,000. Participants get to be Winners by completing a rough draft of this many words by the deadline.

There of course are many events going on in the BG, KY area in the time leading up to the holidays.

Here are just a few:

November 27th is the free WKU Trombone Studio Recital at 7:30 - 9 at WKU's Fine Arts Center.

November 28th: William Paul Young, author of The Shack, will be at the Sloan Convntion Center 6-8 p.m. today. Free tickets are available at library locations. 781-4882.

November 30th: Today is the Gallery Hop, also Downtown Lights Up.

November 30th - Dec. 2 is also WinterDance, the WKU Dance production. 745-5845. Tickets are $15 and $12. Time is 8 for Fri. and Sat., and 3 for Sun.

Novemer 30th is also Winterfest for WKU's Symphony, the WKU Chorale, Men's Chorus, the Women's Chorus, the Redshirts and the Treblemakers. 745-7681.

December 1: Today is the 2012 Christmas Parade.

December 1st is also a Holiday Bazaar and Craft Fair (plus breakfast with Santa) at Bristow Elementary from 8-3. 842-1960.

Things to do in Bowling Green this weekend, Sept. 14-16

There are such fun events this weekend, as usual.

Friday, September 14th

Today the Bowling Green Retirement Village's Art for the Ages Art show continues. 842-5433.

The Festival of Sand is today from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or 6:00 at the grass lot behind the Chamber of Commerce, Bowling Green. Find out more: http://visitbgky.com/events/detail/festival-of-sand/. This is a fundraiser for Kids on the Block.

A free computer class is today, Introduction to Computers and the Internet, from 10-11 a.m. at the Smiths Grove branch library. You must pre-register to attend. Call 563-6651.

The Parade of Homes continues today from 5-8. Tickets are $10.00 with 12 and under free. Find out more: 781-3375. Cabaret for a Cause is tonight at 8 p.m. at the Phoenix Theater at 545 Morris Alley, to raise money for the Catherine Heltsley Foundation for Breast Cancer. 781-6233.

A 55 and Over Senior Dance and Potluck is tonight from 6-9 p.m. at the Old Alvaton Gymnasium off Highway 231 in Alvaton. Music will be by Wayde Phillips. More info: 270-318-4514.

A free concert featuring a Violin and Piano duo, featuring Ching-Hi Lin and Graciella Kowalczyk,  is tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the WKU  Van Meter Auditorium.

Saturday, September 15th

Today is the Cumberland Presbyterian Church's Kuntry Store. This is such a fun event. It is from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. I found my Kewpie Doll here one year! They have neat crafts, food, and more. 781-3295.

Nearby, the Potter Children's Home has a Fall Festival starting at 9:30 a.m. Here is the description from the WCVK Community Happenings Page: "9/15/12 Potters Children’s Home and Family Ministries, Bowling Green, Ky. is having their 10th Annual Fall Festival and Auction on Saturday, September 15th starting at 9:30 am. There will be Silent Auction with over 80 plus items, Resale shop will be open, children activities, inflatables, and Food like BBQ and catfish and more. For more information call: 270-843-3038."

The National Corvette Museum has a Celebrate My Drive for teenagers from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Find out more: http://www.corvettemuseum.org/registration/drive/index.shtml.

There is a Buddy Walk today to benefit Down's Syndrome of South Central Kentucky. Gates open at 9 a.m. at the BG Ballpark. Find out more: http://www.dssky.org/community/buddy-walk/.

From the WCVK Community Happenings Page: "9/15/12 The “Running For St. Jude 5K and 1 Mile Walk" will be on September 15th At Phil Moore Park Alvaton, Ky. Registration starting at 7:30 am. With races following afterwards at 8:00 for the 5K run and 8:30 the 1 Mile Walk. The cost is $20 for the run and $15 for the walk. You can register online at active.com or stop by Trax Running to pick up a registration form. For more information please call: Marshall at 270-991-3936."

The Parade of Homes continues today from 1-5. Tickets are $10.00 with 12 and under free. Find out more: 781-3375. The WKU Hardin Planetarium has a free presentation at 2 p.m. about NASA's Rover on Mars. It is first-come, first-served seating. 745-4044.

"9/29/12 HANDS (Housing Assistance and Development Services) is sponsoring a Free Homebuyer Education Class on September 29th from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Tomorrow Center in Bowling Green, Ky. Class covers several items to finding the right home to basic home maintenance. Lunch will be provided. For more information or to register for a class call: Anna Byrum at 270-796-4176 extension 1. "

September 29th is also the International Festival.


"10/6/12 South Central Kentucky Heart Walk & 5K Run will be at Kereiakes Park, Bowling Green, Ky. On October 6th 8:00 am with the walk and run starting at 9:00 am. There will be breakfast, silent auction, a Kids Zone, Dog Zone, health booths set up along with a award ceremony at the end. For more information contact Michelle Alloway at 270-846-5061."

Today is a Seussical the Musical matinee put on by our local group, Fountain Square Players, at WKU's Van Meter Auditorium at 3 p.m. Tickets are $8.00 - $14.00. Call 782-3119. (Dr. Seuss characters).

A Southern Kentucky Team Penning Association event is today at the WKU Ag Expo Center starting at 10:30. 745-3976.

St. James United Methodist Church has a Southern Gospel Concert tonight at 6 p.m. featuring Southern Sound and South Land Quartets. 842-4949.

Beech Bend Raceway has the TENN-TUCK 2012 Triple Crown racing event today starting at 8 a.m. Open time trials are at 9-10:30 a.m. Find out more: http://www.beechbend.com/dragstrip.htm.

Wednesday, July 4th
Today is Independence Day.

From the WCVK Community Happenings Page: "7/4/12 Southside Baptist Church, 557 Memphis Junction Road, Bowling Green, Ky. Will be having a July 4th Cookout and Fireworks. The cookout will begin at 6:00 pm and fireworks display will be at dark. This event is free. For more information please call: Tony Brown at 782-5558"

Chaney's Dairy Barn is open today until 9 p.m.! This is via their Facebook page.

Concert starts in Fountain Square Park at 6:30, and features Song Farmers (bluegrass/ Celtic) and follows with Ernie Small Blues Band at Circus Square Park starting at 7:30. Beech Bend Park features the Kent Family Circus through July 8th. Find out more on the Kentucky Tourism page.

In this presentation new photographs and NASA footage will be used to explore the impact Venus has had throughout our history, discuss our current understanding of its composition and atmosphere and highlight NASA's plans for future missions - all aimed at determining if it will ever be possible for humans to live on Venus. Today is also Lost River Cave's I Love BG Day. From their site:

Known throughout history as the Morning Star, the Evening Star and named after the Roman Goddess of love and beauty, Venus has so much in common with the Earth that it is often called its "sister" or "twin". In this presentation new photographs and NASA footage will be used to explore the impact Venus has had throughout our history, discuss our current understanding of its composition and atmosphere and highlight NASA's plans for future missions - all aimed at determining if it will ever be possible for humans to live on Venus.
