From the Kentucky Literary Newsletter #225: "The Kentucky State Poetry Society is now accepting submissions for their annual poetry competition.  See www.kystatepoetrysociety.org/Contests.html for entry guidelines.  Deadline is June 30. 

The Kentucky Women Writers Conference is now accepting submissions for the 2011 Gabehart Prize. Three prizes are awarded --- poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. Each winner receives $200, two 2-day passes to the conference, and the opportunity to read her winning manuscript at the conference.  Access the guidelines and entry form here."

May and June Squirrels in the Square:
Find 6 squirrels at participating shops in Fountain Square through the 31st of each month and win a big, big Surprise Basket filled with neat things. Just find 6 squirrels at shops downtown.

The Gallery Hop in Bowling Green is coming up on Friday June 4th from 5-8 p.m. Mark your calendar! 

Memphis Marsha's is having an exhibit, Observations: Real and Imagined" from June 3rd through Augut 5th.

Donn Mierti (photographer) has an exhibit at the Main Branch library in May in the Porter Cafe. 781-4882.

Anthony Wycihowski photos will be shown at the Bob Kirby Branch Library in May.


Photographs from Safe Haven will continue to be shown from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the ArtsAccess Gallery at 515 East 10th Ave., BG. Monday through Friday. 781-0872.

The VSA Arts Access Gallery is showing "The Artist Within" in May. They are open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Tonight at 7:00 p.m. is the Planetarium presentation at WKU's Hardin Planetarium. From the WBKO Community Calendar: "Venus: Our Sister Planet Summer Planetarium Presentation May 31, 2011 - Jul 10, 2011 Tues.& Thurs. 7 pm; Sunday 2 pm
Hardin Planetarium, Western Kentucky University
Known throughout history as the Morning Star, the Evening Star and named after the Roman Goddess of love and beauty, Venus has so much in common with the Earth that it is often called its "sister" or "twin". In this presentation new photographs and NASA footage will be used to explore the impact Venus has had throughout our history, discuss our current understanding of its composition and atmosphere and highlight NASA's plans for future missions - all aimed at determining if it will ever be possible for humans to live on Venus. For further information contact Dept. of Physics and Astronomy, Hardin Planetarium at 270-745-4044."

June 4th the Caveman Barbership Chorus will sing at WKU's Van Meter Hall VMH Lobby at 7-10 p.m.

Beech Bend Park is open! They have a lot of events, races and more going on this month. Beech Bend is an amusement park, campground, and has a drag racing strip and oval track too! So you know, all-day passes that include everything except go-carts and games are 29.99 for adults and 25.99 for children under 54 inches and seniors any size.

The VSA (Very Special Arts) Exhibit is free and open to the public at the Garden Gallery at the Kentucky Library and Museum this month until March 21st. 745-2592.

The Thirty-Nine Steps is presented by Fountain Square Players starting on Thursday, March 17th and going through Sunday, March 20th at the Phoenix Theater. The play is at 8:00 p.m. all evenings except the Sunday matinee, which is at 3:00 p.m. 782-3119. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, and $8 for children under 8.

Guys and Dolls is also playing on Friday, March 18th through Sunday March 20th. Times are 7 p.m. Fri. and Sat., and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at BG Junior High School. 746-2290.

A Quilters Day Out Celebration is at the Calvary Baptist Church at 3011 Elrod Road today from 9-3. Lunch will be available to purchase, also quilts, displays, door prizes, and vendors.

A St. Patrick's Dinner and Raffle takes place at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 6 p.m. tonight. Proceeds support the Restoration Fund for St. Joseph Catholic Church. Tickets are $100.00 which include dinner, raffle, beer and wine. Additional Dinner ticket is $35.00. 842-2525.
