From the Kentucky Literary Newsletter #225: "The Kentucky State Poetry Society is now accepting submissions for their annual poetry competition. See www.kystatepoetrysociety.org/Contests.html for entry guidelines. Deadline is June 30.

The Kentucky Women Writers Conference is now accepting submissions for the 2011 Gabehart Prize. Three prizes are awarded --- poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. Each winner receives $200, two 2-day passes to the conference, and the opportunity to read her winning manuscript at the conference. Access the guidelines and entry form here."

May and June Squirrels in the Square:
Find 6 squirrels at participating shops in Fountain Square through the 31st of each month and win a big, big Surprise Basket filled with neat things. Just find 6 squirrels at shops downtown.

The Gallery Hop in Bowling Green is coming up on Friday June 4th from 5-8 p.m. Mark your calendar!

Memphis Marsha's is having an exhibit, Observations: Real and Imagined" from June 3rd through Augut 5th.

Donn Mierti (photographer) has an exhibit at the Main Branch library in May in the Porter Cafe. 781-4882.

Anthony Wycihowski photos will be shown at the Bob Kirby Branch Library in May.

Photographs from Safe Haven will continue to be shown from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the ArtsAccess Gallery at 515 East 10th Ave., BG. Monday through Friday. 781-0872.

The VSA Arts Access Gallery is showing "The Artist Within" in May. They are open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Tonight at 7:00 p.m. is the Planetarium presentation at WKU's Hardin Planetarium. From the WBKO Community Calendar: "Venus: Our Sister Planet Summer Planetarium Presentation May 31, 2011 - Jul 10, 2011 Tues.& Thurs. 7 pm; Sunday 2 pm

Known throughout history as the Morning Star, the Evening Star and named after the Roman Goddess of love and beauty, Venus has so much in common with the Earth that it is often called its "sister" or "twin". In this presentation new photographs and NASA footage will be used to explore the impact Venus has had throughout our history, discuss our current understanding of its composition and atmosphere and highlight NASA's plans for future missions - all aimed at determining if it will ever be possible for humans to live on Venus. June 4th the Caveman Barbership Chorus will sing at WKU's Van Meter Hall VMH Lobby at 7-10 p.m.

Beech Bend Park is open! They have a lot of events, races and more going on this month. Beech Bend is an amusement park, campground, and has a drag racing strip and oval track too! Check out their site to find out more. http://www.beechbend.com. I just picked up a brochure. So you know, all-day passes that include everything except go-carts and games are 29.99 for adults and 25.99 for children under 54 inches and seniors any size.

"Kentucky Museum, April 15 – May 14, Department of Art Spring Graduating Seniors Exhibition
From Graphic Design to Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Weaving, Ceramics and Sculpture, this group exhibition, co-sponsored and hosted by the Kentucky Library and Museum, presents the work of the Department of Art’s Seniors graduating in the Spring of 2011. Saturday, May 14: Closing Reception".

From the WCVK Community pages: "Now-4/29 The Gallery at 916 State Street, Bowling Green, and five local churches present 'Meditations on the Holy Cross' an art exhibit by Prof. John Warren Oakes, WKU Art Dept., depicting the crucifixion in several different media. Russell Sims Water Park is having a Pre-Season Pass Sale this month until the 29th. Individuals are $75.00 and a family of 4 is $175. If you sign up now you also get a free pass to the BGPR Fitness Center. Opening Day is May 21st. 393-3249.

The Corvette Museum C5/C6 Bash starts today at 9 a.m. at the Corvete Museum. Call for details 781-7973.

From the WCVK Community pages: "4/28/11 American Business Women’s Association will have a Bar-B-Q Fest at The Presbyterian Church, 1003 State St., Bowling Green, April 28, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Cost is $7 for meal which includes pulled pork sandwich, baked beans, coleslaw, chips, drink, and dessert. Proceeds benefit ABWA Educational Scholarship. Delivery for 10 or more meals is available by calling 779-6239 or 791-2368 by April 27."

Capital Arts has a fundraiser tonight for Orchestra Kentucky, One of These Nights: A Tribute to the Eagles at 7 p.m. 846-2426.

A CASA lunch is today at 11:30 - 1 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 911 Searcy Way to raise awareness of Court Appointed Special Advocates for children. Donations are accepted. 782-5353.

Friday, April 29th

The WKU Ag Expo center has a Big Dawg Goat Sale today starting at 8 a.m. Call for info: 745-3976.

The C5/C6 Bash continues at the National Corvette Museum.

An event, Music, Moxie, and Mayhem (Or: Revolution Rocks) is today at 4:00 to midnight at Circus Square Park sponsored by Revolution 91.7 radio. This is a benefit for Moss Middle School's music program. Donations will be accepted.

Phil Moore Park has an Arbor Day Celebration today from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Planting, craft tables, learning stations, and more will be there. Call Lisa Clary at 843-6665 for more info.

A free singing recital, Broadway and beyond, is today at WKU's FAC Recital Hall featuring Liza Kelly and Tracey Moore. 745-3751.

Also, the WKU Concert Band and Wind Ensemble perform from 7:30 - 9:30 at Van Meter OR Ivan Wilson Center FAC 0189. (check time and place - another event listing says 7:30 - 9:00 and gives another location). Tickets are $5.00 apiece. 745-3751.

The Mint Jubilee benefit Gala and Dinner for St. Joseph School is at 6 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall. You must have a reservation to attend. It is $40.00 per person or $75.00 per couple. Find out more: 842-1235 (St. Joseph School).

Art Shows and Exhibitions

The VSA (Very Special Arts) Exhibit is free and open to the public at the Garden Gallery at the Kentucky Library and Museum this month until March 21st. 745-2592.

The Thirty-Nine Steps is presented by Fountain Square Players starting on Thursday, March 17th and going through Sunday, March 20th at the Phoenix Theater. The play is at 8:00 p.m. all evenings except the Sunday matinee, which is at 3:00 p.m. 782-3119. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, and $8 for children under 8.
