Events for Monday, June 11th in the Bowling Green Kentucky area

Here are just a few events for today.

The Hobby Lobby Community Room is the site for Art, Fashion, and Design Workshops today, starting at 11:30 a.m. You must pre-register to attend. Call 270-777-2501 for more info.

The Libraries have fun events today too. See the Library website for details. http://www.warrenpl.org/main.html (click on "Events" - then click on the section you like.)

A free computer class is today, MS Excel Intermediate, at the Main Branch library from 6-7:30 p.m. You must pre-register to attend. 781-4882.

Today you can tour the Rainhill Equine Center from 1-4 p.m. Rainhill is on 11125 Kentucky Highway 185, Bowling Green.

The WKU Hardin Planetarium has a free show today, “Venus, our Sister Planet” at 2 p.m. Seating is first-come, first served.

Monday, June 13
Today Chaney’s Dairy Barn has tours of the farm at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. for $6.00 per person. You need to call ahead for an appointment to go on the tour. 843-5567. They also have tours on Fridays.

Warren County Public Library has a kick-off concert for the Summer Reading Program today by the Wulfe Brothers at 2 p.m. at the Parker-Bennet-Curry Elementary School gym. Sign up there or any library branch. Read books – win prizes.

Barnes and Noble is also having a Reading Program this summer for grades 1-6. Their kickoff is at 11:30 a.m.

A free computer class, Coupons, is held from 6-7 p.m. at the Main Branch library. You must pre-register to attend. Call 781-4882.

The Kentucky Blues Society Teen Jam is at the WhaBah Steakhouse from 6-9 today. 782-6400.

Today is Flag Day.

A free computer class, Microsoft Excel Basics, is at 9-10:30 a.m. today at the Main Branch library. You must pre-register to attend. Call 781-4882.

A new club, the Home Brew Club, meets for the first time today at 6 p.m. at Bowling Green Pipe and Cigar shop on the square. Everyone is welcome. Email Matt at hommj@topper.wku.edu with questions.

Graham Troopers meet today at the Graham Drive branch library at 3 p.m. They will make Claw Tooth necklaces.

Thursday, June 16
Beech Bend Raceway sponsors the NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion today starting at 9 a.m. and going through the 18th. 781-7634. For more information, visit the site at http://www.museum.nhra.com.

The Bowling Green Main Branch library has a High Five Kids Cub for K-5 at 4 p.m. They learn about China today. 781-4882.

The WKU Chess Club meets today at the Log Cabin on the WKU Campus from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. All ages and skill levels are welcome.  Questions, call 918-809-6278. You may want to bring your chess set.

Teen Scene for students in grades 6-12, is meeting at 3:30 p.m. at the Bob Kirby Branch library. 782-0252.

Orchestra Kentucky has a Beatle Madness show today at 7:30 p.m. at the Bowling Green Ballpark Stadium. Tickets start at $15.00 per person. 846-2426, http://www.OrchestraKentucky.com.

Saturday, June 18
Today is Kiwanis Yoga Gentle Flow in Keriakes Park behind the shelter at 8 a.m. with Shanda for all ages and experience. This event is free. Next is Playground Yoga at 9:15 for preschoolers and their families.  782-6984.

A family-friendly bike ride is today at Lost River Cave called the Tour de town: Lost River Cave Ride, which starts at 9 a.m. Helmets are required. This event is sponsored by http://www.BikeBG.org. This event is open to the public and free.

The First Annual Bad Apple Records Label Showcase is today from 6-9 p.m. at Roland Bland Skate Park, Bowling Green. Music performances by different music artists. This event is open to the public and all ages.

Nathaniel Mo gives a Piano Recital at 7 p.m. tonight at the Christ Episcopal Church Parish Hall at 1215 State Street. Donations are welcome.

Russell Sims Aquatic Center has Night of the Pirates from 7-9 p.m. for ages 6 and up. Tickets are $6.00 for ages 6 and up and $3.00 for ages 5 and under. Season pass holders get ½ price. 393-3249.

From the Kentucky Literary Newsletter #225: "The Kentucky State Poetry Society is now accepting submissions for their annual poetry competition.  See www.kystatepoetrysociety.org/Contests.html for entry guidelines.  Deadline is June 30. 

The Kentucky Women Writers Conference is now accepting submissions for the 2011 Gabehart Prize. Three prizes are awarded --- poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. Each winner receives $200, two 2-day passes to the conference, and the opportunity to read her winning manuscript at the conference.  Access the guidelines and entry form here."

May and June Squirrels in the Square:
Find 6 squirrels at participating shops in Fountain Square through the 31st of each month and win a big, big Surprise Basket filled with neat things. Just find 6 squirrels at shops downtown.

The Gallery Hop in Bowling Green is coming up on Friday June 4th from 5-8 p.m. Mark your calendar! 

Memphis Marsha's is having an exhibit, Observations: Real and Imagined" from June 3rd through Augut 5th.

Donn Mierti (photographer) has an exhibit at the Main Branch library in May in the Porter Cafe. 781-4882.

Anthony Wycihowski photos will be shown at the Bob Kirby Branch Library in May.


Photographs from Safe Haven will continue to be shown from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the ArtsAccess Gallery at 515 East 10th Ave., BG. Monday through Friday. 781-0872.

The VSA Arts Access Gallery is showing "The Artist Within" in May. They are open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Tonight at 7:00 p.m. is the Planetarium presentation at WKU's Hardin Planetarium. From the WBKO Community Calendar: "Venus: Our Sister Planet Summer Planetarium Presentation May 31, 2011 - Jul 10, 2011 Tues.& Thurs. 7 pm; Sunday 2 pm
Hardin Planetarium, Western Kentucky University
Known throughout history as the Morning Star, the Evening Star and named after the Roman Goddess of love and beauty, Venus has so much in common with the Earth that it is often called its "sister" or "twin". In this presentation new photographs and NASA footage will be used to explore the impact Venus has had throughout our history, discuss our current understanding of its composition and atmosphere and highlight NASA's plans for future missions - all aimed at determining if it will ever be possible for humans to live on Venus. For further information contact Dept. of Physics and Astronomy, Hardin Planetarium at 270-745-4044."

June 4th the Caveman Barbership Chorus will sing at WKU's Van Meter Hall VMH Lobby at 7-10 p.m.
From the WCVK Community Happenings page: "6/4/11 Caveman Chorus presents Harmony Hitz with The Music City Chorus and Lunchbreak at WKU’s Van Meter Auditorium, June 4, 7 p.m. Tickets for this barbershop concert are $17, $5 for students. For more information call 783-1032."

June 10th is also Civilian Tea Time at Riverview at Hobson Grove.

Sunburst Youth Theater Day Camp 2011 will take place June 6-17.

June 25 is the Vette City Roller Derby: VCRD vs. Black-N-Bluegrass A & B team (HOME)  

July 17th from 2-4pm is Geocaching 101: Hiding a Cache at Lost River Cave.
September 24th is the date of the International Festival from 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. at Circus Square Park.

Art Shows and Exhibitions



The VSA (Very Special Arts) Exhibit is free and open to the public at the Garden Gallery at the Kentucky Library and Museum this month until March 21st. 745-2592.


Also, they have an art display of Photographs of Safe Haven at the ACCESS Gallery at 515 East 10th Avenue. Call for gallery times: 781-0872.

Kendall McMinimy is showing his art at the WKU Ivan Wilson FAC Corridor Gallery from Feb. 16-March 23rd. 745-3944.

A Modern Atomic Art exhibition will take place Feb. 18th  - March 25th at The Gallery at 916. http://www.thegalleryat916.com.

Kay Zoretic's jewelry is exhibited at the Warren County Library main branch this month through February 28th. 781-4882. 

Kim Soule's art will show at the Warren County Public Library Bob Kirby Branch through March 31st. 

The Capital Arts Center and Houchen's sponsors the BG/WC Youth Exhibit through March 23rd, Monday through Friday in the Houchens and Mezzanine Calleries.

Check out the BG Calendars!

Checking the Bowling Green Calendars can really help you find cheap and free things to do in Bowling Green.

Number one, of course if the official Bowling Green City Calendar. Some things listed for March are a Landscape Design and Tree Planting /Selection Class, a Teens United for the Future meeting, and a Germination of Annual and Vegetable Seeds Class.
The Bowling Green City Calendar also has a Calendar Links page, which features lots more calendars.

The Warren County Public Library Calendar has all kinds of exhibits, talks and meetings for all ages, and craft times listed for March.

Of course, there is the popular WKU Calendar, (listed on the blog here already) which has campus events, arts, music, and lots more.

Bowling Green Community Education (Bowling Green Warren County) has their Adult Enrichment classes not as a calendar, but as a downloadable PDF form.
