March Squirrels in the Square:
Find 6 squirrels at participating shops in Fountain Square this month and win a big, big Surprise Basket filled with neat things. Just find 6 squirrels at shops downtown and turn the card in to Candlemakers on the Square. They have more entry forms too, so pick one up today.

Art Shows and Exhibitions

An artist's reception for Darrly Halbrook and Joe Moilnaro (EKU) is today at 5-7 p.m. at the Capital Arts Center. This exhibition will be held through April 19th. 

The VSA (Very Special Arts) Exhibit is free and open to the public at the Garden Gallery at the Kentucky Library and Museum this month until March 21st. 745-2592.

Also, they have an art display of Photographs of Safe Haven at the ACCESS Gallery at 515 East 10th Avenue. Call for gallery times: 781-0872.

Kendall McMinimy is showing his art at the WKU Ivan Wilson FAC Corridor Gallery from Feb. 16-March 23rd. 745-3944.

A Modern Atomic Art exhibition will take place Feb. 18th - March 25th at The Gallery at 916. http://www.thegalleryat916.com. 843-5511.

Kim Soule's art will show at the Warren County Public Library Bob Kirby Branch through March 31st.

The Capital Arts Center and Houchen's sponsors the BG/WC Youth Exhibit through March 23rd, Monday through Friday in the Houchens and MSezzanine Calleries.

The US Bank Celebration of the Arts art show opens Feb. 27th and runs through April 2nd at the Kentucky Museum. See all kinds of great art here. http://bit.ly/hnjSRA

Sarah Dineen will show new paintings at WKU's Ivan Wilson FAC Corridor Gallery through April 6th.

A Kentucky Art from the Heart Exhibit is showing at the Main Branch library through March 31st.

GARDEN PLOTS / SPRING BREAK CAMP / WATERPARK PASSES: Signups this month are going on for BG Parks and Rec Garden Plots at Keriakes Park 393-3249, BG Parks and Rec Spring Break Camps 393-3249, and Russell Sims Water park passes, 393-3249. If you want a garden plot, register early because these run out fast.

Signups are taking place for a Fiction Workshop June 13th - July 9th for advanced undergraduate and graduate students at WKU Extended Learning and Outreach. "Release Your Creative Talents!"Contact Dr. David Bell at 745-4406 or email him at david.j.bell@wku.edu for more information.

Plays happening
The Thirty-Nine Steps is presented by Fountain Square Players starting on Thursday, March 17th and going through Sunday, March 20th at the Phoenix Theater. The play is at 8:00 p.m. all evenings except the Sunday matinee, which is at 3:00 p.m. 782-3119. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, and $8 for children under 8.

Guys and Dolls is also playing on Friday, March 18th through Sunday March 20th. Times are 7 p.m. Fri. and Sat., and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at BG Junior High School. 746-2290.

Sunday, March 20th:
The Capital Arts Center at 416 East Main Street, BG, hosts a Youth Art Reception today at 12:30 p.m. 782-2787.

A free Geocaching 101 Class "Basic GPS" will take place today at Lost River Cave from 2-4 p.m. Contact Lost River Cave at 393-0077 or Danny Bays at 784-8245 for more info. or what you need to bring with you, etc.

Monday, March 21th:
Fairview Cemetery has a Spring Clean Up from 7-4 today. Collect your decorations for holidays or ones that are old or worn by today.

A free adult computer class Introduction to Computers and the Internet (registration is required) is today at 10 a.m. at the Graham Branch library. Call 781-1441 to register.

Hobby Lobby is sponsoring a Beads, Beads, Beads class for only $10.00 from 4-5:30 p.m. today. Elastic is furnished, bring your own beads OR get them there. Violetta will help you shop for them too. Call 842-4281 to register for the class.

Another free computer class PowerPoint for Beginners, is at 6 p.m. at the Main Branch library. You must pre-register. Call 781-4882.

The Corvette City Bop and Dance Club mets from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome, but you must be 21 or over. Located at the FOP. Call 91-4040 for information.

Chuck Klosterman, author of "Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs" and "Eating the Dinosaur" speaks at 7:30 p.m. at WKU's Van Meter Hall as part of WKU's Cultural Enhancement Series.

Wednesday, March 23rd:
 Southern Lanes has Senior Fun Days at 1:00 pm. This is for seniors ages 50 and over, and features 3 games of bowling, free coffee and prizes. Call for more info. 843-8741.

A free computer class, Introduction to Genealogy Resources, takes place at 6 p.m. at the Main Branch library. You must pre-register. Call 781-4882.

A J. Sturgeon/S. Tinch student recital takes place today at 7:30 p.m. at the WKU Fine Arts Center. Call 745-3751 for more information.

Thursday, March 24th:
A Remember Care Group meeting for friends or family of dementia or Alzheimer's patients is at 4:30 at the Village Manor, Christian Health Center at 1800 Westen Street. Call 796-6643 for more information.

The Main Branch library has John Carloftis speaking about gardening at 6 p.m. You must have a ticket to attend, but these are free and you can get them at the library or by emailing jaynep@warrenpl.org. Call 781-4882 for more info. 

The WKU Chess Club meets today at 6-9 at the WKU Faculty House. This event is open to the public. 918-809-6278.

Friday, March 25th:

Barnes and Noble has a storytime event today at 11:30 a.m. featuring When I Grow Up by Al Yankovic.

Teen Scene features at Vision Board event today at the Bob Kirby Branch library with Alice Gatebood Waddell at 3:30 p.m. This event is for Junior and Senior High School students. "Bring in a few pictures of yourself, and be thinking about what you'd like to accomplish in the next year..." (from Soky Calendar).

Professor Gregory Hansen will have a book signing event and a reading tonight from his book "A Florida Fiddler: The Life and Times of Richard Seaman" at 6-7 p.m. at the Kentucky Library.

From the WCVK Community Happenings Page: "03/4/11 Bowling Green High School Students will perform Bye Bye Birdie, the Tony Award Winning musical, at the Capitol Arts Center March 4 and 5, 7 p.m., and March 6, 3 p.m. The cast is made up of over 80 students including several elementary and junior high students. Tickets are $12 adults, $8 students. Call 746-2300 to reserve seats and for more information."

This is the first day of the Home Expo 2011, which is 5-8 p.m. today at the Sloan Convention Center. See products from landscapers, builders, and designers plus mini-seminars, displays, a door prize, and more. Tickets are $8.00 or 2 for $15.00 for adults and accompanied (by an adult) children are free.

(The Parade is at 10:30 and the Plunge is at 11:00 a.m.)

Art Shows and Exhibitions
The VSA Exhibit is free and open to the public at the Kentucky Library and Museum this month until March 21st. 745-2592.

The Second Annual Public Art Hanging is through Feb. 12th at The Gallery at 916. Each vote costs $1.00. 843-5511.


Capital Arts has a Scholastic Arts Exhibition 02/04 to 02/27.


Monday, Jan. 31
Capital Arts Youth Theater is having auditions today (and tomorrow) from 6-8 p.m. for Grades 2-12 at the Pushin Building. Call 782-2787 for more information.  You can download information about the auditions here: http://www.capitolarts.com/cayt.html. From the Facebook Notes page:

Auditions are open to young people in grades 2-12. To audition, simply show up either evening.  You will only need to attend one of the audition days, but be prepared to stay for the entire time.

From the WKU Events Calendar: A WKU Faculty Recital is today and is free to the public. It is at Ivan Wilson FAC 0189 from 3-5 p.m. Contact wayne.pope@wku.edu for more information.

A Community Super Bowl Party is being held at Cornerstone Church today at 940 Bryant Way across from the mall on Scottsville Road. Doors are opening at 4 p.m. 16 foot screens, bring your favorite finger foods and a friend. Everyone is welcome. 


The VFW at 1298 Ky. Highway 185 is also having a Super Bowl Party starting at 12 noon. $10.00 buffet all you can eat, plus the game will be shown on a 10' x 10' screen. Questions, call Dean Frazier at 270-781-1872.

December Happenings in and around Bowling Green, Kentucky. (#5E)  

This month: Veterans have free admission to the National Corvette Museum. Call 781-7973 for details.  Also (from a Corvette Museum email) "The National Corvette Museum has named the entire month of December “Dollar Days” for residents of Kentucky who visit the Museum. All month long, Kentucky residents can tour the Museum for a $1.00 admission per person, and will only need to show a Kentucky drivers license to take advantage of the special offer. Children will be admitted at the $1.00 price with adults presenting the Kentucky identification." Also "Visitors can also take a chance to win a 2011 Corvette or Camaro for only $10 and do some holiday shopping in the Corvette Store."

"12/3-12/22 32nd annual Trees of Christmas at Eloise Houchens Center, 1115 Adams St., Bowling Green, will be Dec. 3-22, weekdays 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and Sundays 1-4 p.m. Admission is free. Help local children keep a little warmer this winter by making a donation of hats, gloves, and scarves. For more information call 842-6761."

WKU is having their Fall Graduating Seniors Art exhibition this month until the 18th at Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Gallery, FAC and the Corridor Gallery. Call 745-3944.

Also, 30 Trees of Christmas decorated by students will be on display this month in the Kentucky room of the Kentucky Library and Museum. Call for hours, 745-6082.
